We Demand A Progressive Tax Code
Rebalance the tax code and use our public resources to care for all Ohioans.
For Ohio to be a great state, all of us have to come together and do our part. But certain policymakers try to blame our Black, brown, and immigrant neighbors for tough economic times while giving away our public resources to corporations and the mostly white, wealthy few.
Meanwhile, the rest of us pay more than our fair share, especially Black and Brown Ohioans whose communities have been the most under-resourced. We can have a state where everyone has the opportunity for a better life, no matter what they look like or how much money they have. We can start by calling on our leaders to rewrite the rules to ensure every one of us can care for our families, earn a fair return for our work and care for the people who care for us.
Policy Recommendations
Support local communities by restoring funding for the Local Government Fund to its previous level of 3.68% of Ohio’s General Revenue Fund taxes.
Help working people build financial security by adding a 10% refundable option to Ohio’s Earned Income Tax Credit.
Raise taxes on the wealthy to restore the 7.5% tax rate on income over $250,000 (instituted under Republican Gov. George Voinovich and since rolled back), and add a new rate of 8.99% on income over $1 million annually.
Reinstate the Tax Exemption Review Committee to examine the effectiveness of tax loopholes; close the ones that serve only the wealthy and corporations.
Close the LLC loophole, raising an additional $1 billion a year—82% of which would be paid by the richest 5% of Ohioans.
Bring back an 8.5% corporate income tax to complement the existing Commercial Activity Tax. (Companies would pay the higher of the two.)
